Dr. ANU developed a new solar cell

The unique shape design of the Buddhist singing bowl (also known as the Buddha Bowl) is crucial to the sound production. Dr. Niraj Lal of the Australian National University was inspired by the shape design of the singing bowl and developed a new solar cell. .

Niraj discovered that the copper bowl can resonate sounds and keep the sound flowing. By the same token, a bowl-shaped solar cell will also allow the light to fully contact the surface of the cell to better capture the light energy.

Previous studies have shown that the performance of nanoscale light is very different from the performance of our common light. Niraj reduced the bowl-shaped solar cells to the nanometer level, showing us that this kind of battery can capture more light energy and convert light energy into electricity.

Niraj said: "For today's standard-sized solar panels, when sunlight shines on it, a lot of light energy will be lost, and the power efficiency of the panels will be low. But if the shape of the solar panel is the shape of a singing bowl, The light will spin in the bowl-shaped battery for longer."

Niraj called this process "plasmonic resonance," and he developed nanobowl solar cells that have four times the photoelectric conversion efficiency of flat-panel solar cells.

In general, silicon-based solar cells have a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 25%. In the first half of this year, major breakthroughs were made in solar panel technology. Stacked solar panels increased the overall photoelectric conversion efficiency to 43.9% by stacking panels made of different materials to absorb light in a wider spectral range. .

Currently, Niraj and his research team are looking for a way to combine nano-bowl solar cells with stacked solar cells to further improve the photoelectric conversion efficiency.

The study was published in the Photonics Journal of the American Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
