Before installing a diaphragm coupling, it is essential to ensure that the two shafts of the prime mover and the driven machine are perfectly aligned. Check the surface of both shafts for any damage or irregularities, and make sure there is no debris inside the coupling halves. Also, inspect the inner edge of the coupling for burrs or sharp edges. If found, clean the shafts and coupling halves thoroughly, and use a fine file to smooth out any imperfections. Next, verify that the inner diameter and length of both coupling halves match the shaft dimensions and axial extension requirements of the prime mover and working machine. In general, the length of the coupling half on the prime mover and the driven end should be 10–30 mm shorter than the axial extension. To ease installation, it's recommended to preheat the coupling halves in an oven or oil bath at 120–150°C, which will slightly expand the inner diameter and make the assembly process smoother. After installation, ensure that the shaft end does not protrude beyond the face of the coupling half — they should be flush with each other. Measure the distance between the two coupling halves by taking an average of readings from 3–4 points along the inner side of the flange. The total measurement, including the extended section and the two diaphragm sets, should not exceed a tolerance of 0–0.4 mm.
Correction: Use a dial indicator to check the runout of both coupling halves on the flange’s outer circle and end face. If the flange diameter is less than 250 mm, the runout should not exceed 0.05 mm. For flanges larger than 250 mm, the allowable runout is up to 0.08 mm. When mounting the bolts, insert them through the small holes on one flange, then place the buffer sleeves, elastic washers, and nuts onto the large holes of the opposite flange. Tighten the nuts using a wrench. If the installation feels difficult or the coupling is removed, make sure the shaft and coupling halves are not damaged. Once installed, the coupling should rotate smoothly without resistance.
Operator Note: Before starting the equipment, always check if the coupling nuts are tight. If loose, tighten them with a wrench. After a 1-minute no-load start-up, open the load line valve. When shutting down, follow the reverse sequence. It is also recommended to lubricate the outer part of the coupling monthly.
Practical experience has shown that following the manufacturer's installation, maintenance, and operational guidelines ensures that the diaphragm coupling can handle 1–5 daily starts, with a minimum service life of five years for the diaphragm. However, improper installation, incorrect Bolt orientation, excessive misalignment between the prime mover and the driven shaft, or failure to maintain the coupling according to the manual may lead to premature diaphragm failure.
