Abstract On January 17, Taiwan's AU Optronics, the world's fourth-largest panel manufacturer, announced a major change to its planned production facility in Kunshan. Originally intended to be an 8.5-generation TFT LCD panel line, the project has now been restructured into a 6-generation LTPS (low-temperature polysilicon) production line. This shift marks the first time mainland China will have a 6th-generation LTPS panel manufacturing line, signaling a strategic move toward more advanced display technologies.
The Kunshan AUO 8.5 generation line was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission three years ago. However, with the global TV panel market experiencing oversupply, demand for smaller, high-performance panels used in smartphones and tablets has surged. In response, AUO decided to adjust its plans to focus on producing ultra-high-definition, ultra-thin, and low-loss LTPS screens, which are more suitable for next-generation mobile devices.
The new 6-generation LTPS line is expected to start operations at the end of this year or early next year, with an annual output capable of supplying 100 million smartphone displays. This adjustment not only reflects AUO's adaptability to market trends but also highlights the growing importance of LTPS technology in the evolving display industry. With this move, AUO is positioning itself to better meet the needs of the mobile electronics sector while maintaining its competitive edge in the global panel market.
