Hindalco Aluminium Industries, a subsidiary of India's Aditya Birla Group, has secured a $100 million funding commitment from the Canadian Export Development Corporation (EDC). This financial support is intended for the Mahan aluminum project located in Madhya Pradesh, central India, and the agreement was finalized just a few days ago. The project marks a significant step forward in expanding India’s industrial capabilities.
The Mahan project aims to construct a state-of-the-art aluminum smelter with an annual production capacity of 359,000 tons, along with a self-sustaining 900 MW power plant. Given its potential environmental impact, the project has been classified as a Class A project by EDC, which means that all stakeholders must ensure full transparency and public disclosure of environmental assessments.
Stephen Poloz, President and CEO of EDC, highlighted that the Mahan project represents the company’s first non-recourse financing in India. The $100 million provided by EDC is part of a broader investment plan, which also includes insurance, credit guarantees, and direct investments. In addition to this, EDC has allocated $110 million to establish four new companies in India, further deepening its involvement in the region.
Poloz expressed strong enthusiasm for strengthening economic ties between Canada and India. He has visited India multiple times, and both countries' leaders have set an ambitious target to increase bilateral trade from the current $500 million to $1.5 billion.
