Since 2002, ceramic chip capacitors have been widely used in various electronic products. Initially, no major issues were reported with large-capacity capacitors. However, as product designs evolved and the need for more rigorous testing grew, the requirement for temperature cycling and stress selection became common. After these tests, some ceramic chip capacitors began to fail consistently. For example, in frequency circuits and coupling circuits, 3.9pF capacitors failed at a rate of 80%, while 5.1pF capacitors had an 11% failure rate. These failures have significantly impacted the reliability of the final products and delayed production schedules. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate and resolve these issues promptly.
From a theoretical perspective, capacitor failures are typically attributed to six main factors, including material defects, mechanical stress, thermal expansion mismatch, voltage overload, humidity exposure, and poor soldering techniques. Understanding these root causes helps manufacturers implement targeted improvements. By addressing these issues through better design, enhanced testing protocols, and improved manufacturing processes, the industry can ensure higher reliability and longer lifespan for ceramic chip capacitors.
