Non-excavation directional drilling of the main pipeline of Yili River

The successful non-excavation directional drilling of the Ili River main pipeline is one of the key projects on the Central Asia C Line. It involves three crossings: the mud pipe, main pipeline, and spare pipe. This particular main pipeline crossing features a diameter of 1219 mm and spans 1019 meters. The geological conditions mainly consist of sand and silt, making it challenging to maintain hole stability and increasing the risk of collapse. To ensure the project's success, the company developed a scientifically sound and practical construction plan, drawing from the experience gained during the previous 1219 mm large-diameter sand layer crossing in the eastern section of the West River and the second section of the West Second Line. On June 8, the project officially commenced. Construction faced numerous challenges, as the Yili River area is largely composed of sand, making it difficult for large vehicles to access the site. The rig equipment struggled to be properly positioned. However, through the collective efforts of the company’s employees, these obstacles were overcome, enabling the completion of this critical project on the Central Asia C Line. As part of their commitment to energy infrastructure, the team demonstrated the spirit of the "Pipeline Iron Man," enduring harsh weather, dust, and insect bites, while quickly repairing a construction access road and preparing the site for the crossing. The Kazakh market presented additional difficulties, with limited availability of equipment and materials. The company actively coordinated with its internal teams and international partners to secure supplies and ensure smooth operations. Additionally, the remote construction site was vulnerable to wildlife and security threats from armed groups. To address these risks, the company implemented a comprehensive HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) program and an emergency response plan, including hiring local security personnel for 24-hour patrols to protect the workers. During the on-site construction, the company adopted a six-stage reaming and two-stage drilling method to ensure the borehole’s size and cleanliness. Advanced PE pipe water injection and floating technology was used to facilitate the pipeline’s return. Construction crews worked in shifts around the clock, completing the heavy-duty roller transmission process within the safe window of the borehole. Five large-tonnage pipe-lifting machines were also deployed, effectively addressing the challenge of dragging the pipeline through the unstable sand layer and ensuring a stable and continuous pull. At around 10 PM on July 4, the pipeline began to be pulled back. After nearly 15 hours of continuous underground operation, the long steel pipeline successfully emerged. The project was completed in just 19 days, which was 27 days faster than the Ili River crossings for the Central Asia A Line and 7 days faster than the B Line. This main pipeline crossing marked the first directional drilling project completed on the Central Asia C Line. Its success provided valuable experience for future crossings and played a vital role in accelerating the construction of the C Line pipeline across Central Asia.
