Potassium fertilizer plays a crucial role in significantly boosting rice yields. When potassium is adequately supplied, it enhances photosynthesis, promotes the synthesis and accumulation of sugars, strengthens plant resistance, improves root respiration, supports nitrogen uptake and protein formation, and ultimately leads to fuller grains, higher yields, and more stable production. However, there are four key points to consider when applying potassium fertilizer:
First, the dosage must be appropriate. Follow the principle of "four more and four less." Apply more potassium where soil has low levels, apply more during early rice growth stages and less for late rice. High-stalk varieties require more potassium, while dwarf types need less. Hybrid rice benefits more from potassium than conventional varieties. Research shows that applying 7.5 to 10 kg of potassium chloride per acre offers the best economic return.
Second, timing of application is important. Rice requires the most potassium during the tillering and panicle differentiation stages. It's best to apply potassium once during the tillering stage. If two applications are needed, the first should be at tillering, and the second at the young panicle differentiation stage.
Third, potassium should be used in combination with nitrogen and phosphorus to maximize its effectiveness. The ideal ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium is 1:0.5:1.2. This balanced approach ensures optimal nutrient uptake and utilization by the plants.
Fourth, lime should be applied appropriately. Potassium chloride and potassium sulfate are considered acid-forming fertilizers. Prolonged use can lead to soil acidification. Therefore, it's essential to apply lime as needed to neutralize soil acidity and create a better growing environment for rice.
By following these guidelines, farmers can ensure that potassium is used efficiently, leading to healthier crops and greater productivity. Proper potassium management not only increases yield but also contributes to long-term soil health and sustainable farming practices.
