The origin of the cooker

Gas stoves have a fascinating history that dates back to the early 19th century. The first gas stove was developed by a Frenchman named Philip Ruben, who received a patent for a gas-fired and heating dual-use device on September 21, 1799. Just a year later, he installed this invention in a Parisian restaurant. However, the early gas stove had a major drawback—it emitted an unpleasant odor, which made it less appealing at first. Despite this, Ruben remained passionate about improving his design. Tragically, his work came to an abrupt end in 1804 when he was killed during a street incident on the day of Napoleon’s coronation.

Later, in 1826, James Schaff, a deputy manager of the Northampton Gas Company in the UK, created what is considered the world's first gas stove designed specifically for kitchen use. He installed it in his own home and used it to cook meat. This early model was a vertical stove with a hook hanging from the ceiling to hold meat and a circular fire pit below—there was no separate surface for cooking pans.

The first commercial user of a gas stove was a bus inn in Leamington, France. In 1834, the inn used a gas stove to prepare dinner for 100 people. Not only did the food turn out delicious, but it also lacked the strong gas smell that had previously been a concern. This made it a highly desirable appliance. By 1836, a factory in Northampton, England, began mass-producing gas stoves, employing 35 workers.

In 1852, gas stoves that combined both burners and cooking surfaces became available for sale. Then, in 1915, a significant advancement came with the introduction of gas stoves equipped with thermostat controls, making them more efficient and user-friendly.

In 1855, German chemist Robert Bunsen invented the "Bunsen burner," a device that mixed oxygen with flammable gas to create intense heat. Soon after its invention, the British company Hoddington Anton Smith developed the world's first gas-powered domestic heating system. Over time, as gas stoves became more popular and gas supply infrastructure expanded, modern gas cookers gradually evolved into the appliances we use today.
