Development of mold industry to promote the internationalization of China's equipment manufacturing industry

The equipment manufacturing industry serves as the backbone of the national economy, and high-end equipment manufacturing has become one of the core sectors driving economic growth during China's "12th Five-Year Plan" period. As Chinese enterprises increasingly expand their global presence, mold and die companies are expected to play a more active role in innovation, which is essential for the sustained development of the industry. Most Chinese mold enterprises are small or medium-sized businesses that have evolved from workshop-style or family-run operations. Many still operate under outdated management models, with limited investment in research and development. This lack of modernization not only hinders growth but also makes it difficult for these companies to compete effectively in today’s demanding mold market. The gap between domestic and international mold enterprises is becoming more evident. While technical challenges exist, the real issue lies in outdated management practices and insufficient strategic vision. These shortcomings often have a more significant impact on long-term success than technological deficiencies. In recent years, the domestic equipment manufacturing sector has experienced rapid growth, with production requirements rising sharply across various industries. In the high-end manufacturing field, industrial output has surpassed 1.6 trillion yuan, according to Luo Baihui, Secretary-General of the International Mold Association. Despite this progress, China is still narrowing the gap with developed nations like the U.S. and Germany. The global financial crisis had a profound impact on the equipment manufacturing industry in 2012. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, the industry's value-added growth dropped by 6.7% year-on-year, reaching just 8.4%. This decline was mainly due to reduced orders, sharp drops in exports, and only marginal improvements in corporate profits. Today, Chinese enterprises—especially those in competitive sectors—often face non-trade barriers and geopolitical constraints. The government and industry associations must work together to protect the overseas interests and assets of Chinese firms. Strengthening international collaboration through exhibitions, technical exchanges, forums, and trade activities will be key to promoting global manufacturing development and enhancing China’s role as a major player in the industry. Looking ahead, major user industries in China’s mold sector are expected to continue growing at a steady pace, particularly in the plastic mold segment. Experts believe that many existing challenges can be gradually addressed through increased domestic and international cooperation, collective efforts from the industry, and broader support from all stakeholders.
