The equipment manufacturing industry serves as the backbone of the national economy, and high-end equipment manufacturing has become one of the key focuses for economic growth during China's "12th Five-Year Plan" period. As Chinese enterprises increasingly expand their global presence, mold and die companies must take a more proactive role in driving innovation and supporting the sustainable development of the industry.
Most Chinese mold enterprises are small or medium-sized businesses that have evolved from workshop-style or family-run operations. Many still operate under outdated management models, relying on traditional, extensive methods. This often leads to technological stagnation and challenges in maintaining efficient operations.
Such outdated management practices severely hinder company growth and make it difficult to keep up with the intense competition in today’s mold market. Limited investment in research and development, along with conservative thinking and insufficient strategic focus, further widen the gap between domestic and international standards. In many cases, the management gap is more critical than the technical gap, creating long-term challenges for the industry.
In recent years, China’s industrial sector has experienced rapid growth, with production equipment requirements rising significantly. Particularly in high-end manufacturing, the industry's output value has surpassed 1.6 trillion yuan. According to Luo Baihui, Secretary-General of the International Mold Association, China has made remarkable progress in closing the gap with developed nations like the U.S. and Germany. Domestically, mold and die companies should seize opportunities to strengthen their global position.
The equipment manufacturing industry in 2012 was heavily impacted by the global financial crisis. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, the industry’s added value grew by 8.4% year-on-year, a significant drop of 6.7% compared to previous years. This decline was mainly due to reduced orders, sharp drops in exports, and only marginal improvements in corporate profits.
Currently, Chinese enterprises—especially those operating in competitive markets—often face non-trade and non-economic barriers. The government and industry associations must work harder to protect the overseas interests and assets of Chinese firms. Strengthening cooperation with international organizations and manufacturers through exhibitions, technical exchanges, forums, and trade activities will help China play a greater role in global manufacturing development.
Looking ahead, major user industries in China’s mold sector are expected to continue growing at a steady pace, with plastic molds also experiencing strong development. Experts believe that ongoing exchanges and collaborations—both domestically and internationally—along with collective efforts from all stakeholders, will gradually resolve existing challenges and drive the industry forward.
