French company develops butadiene technology for birth material

According to reports, French biochemical company Global Bioenergies stated that they have developed a direct bioprocess technology that can make butadiene from renewable raw materials. The company signed a strategic partnership agreement with rubber producer Synthos in July 2011, and thus completed the first phase of cooperation between the partners. The butadiene cooperation program between the two parties has now entered the development phase and Synthos will invest millions of euros through annual fees.

Synthos chairman Tomasz Kalwat stated that the development of butadiene process technology that is eco-friendly and cost-competitive bio-materials will create a new generation of rubber and have a clear competitive advantage. In recent years, the global butadiene market has been very tight, and it is expected that it will continue to maintain its shortfalls, especially as the consumption of synthetic rubber in emerging market regions continues to grow, market participants said.

Earlier this year, LanzaTech, headquartered in Auckland, signed an agreement with INVISTA, which produces nylon 6,6, to produce butadiene using 2,3-butanediol produced by LanzaTech's proprietary microbes. The ultimate goal of LanzaTech is to produce butadiene directly from its microorganisms. Global Bioenergies also announced that it has achieved the production of propylene and isobutylene from renewable raw materials. LanzaTech and Global Bioenergy are also exploring possible collaborations to determine whether global bio-energy isobutene technology can be used for LanzaTech's gas feedstock microbial technology.
