Feeding newly weaned piglets is a critical and technical task that requires careful attention. The right feeding strategy is essential for their healthy growth and development. Both overfeeding and underfeeding can lead to serious issues. Overfeeding may cause digestive problems such as indigestion and diarrhea, while underfeeding can lead to stress due to hunger, which negatively affects their overall health.
So, how should we feed weaned piglets properly? Here are some key techniques to follow:
First, monitor the piglets' feed intake. After feeding, check the troughs regularly to see if there are any leftovers. If there's only a small amount of leftover feed and no large piles or pellets, it means the quantity is just right. However, if the trough is clean and wet, it suggests that the piglets didn't get enough food, and you should increase the amount slightly next time. On the other hand, if there's a lot of leftover feed, it indicates that you've given too much, and you should reduce the portion accordingly.
Second, observe the piglets’ feces. Check if their excretion is normal and adjust the feeding amount based on what you see. In the first three days after weaning, their stools tend to be coarse and soft, ranging from yellow to brown—this is normal (they usually defecate 12–15 times a day). If the stool is soft, shiny, and the color is normal, there’s no need to change the feeding amount. However, if you notice scattered feces with visible feed particles, it could mean that some pigs are overeating, and you should reduce the feed by about 20% next time. If the stools are mushy, light gray, or contain undigested feed, it's a sign that the whole group is struggling, and you should stop feeding immediately.
Third, pay attention to the piglets’ behavior. Observe whether they are active and healthy. Before feeding, if the piglets make loud noises and rush to the trough, it shows they are hungry and may need more food. After feeding, if they continue to search for food in the trough and don’t return to the pen, it indicates that they aren’t getting enough. You can add more feed at this point. Conversely, if the piglets show little interest in the feed, make soft sounds, and don’t panic, it suggests they are not very hungry, and you can reduce the amount accordingly.
By carefully observing these three aspects—feed intake, feces, and activity—you can ensure that your weaned piglets receive the proper nutrition they need for optimal growth and development.
