At the center of the table, there's an image showing a group of female college students from Baicheng Normal University working on a solar energy project. The photo captures their dedication and passion for innovation.
Xu Lining, a sophomore at the university, proudly explains how her team developed a solar energy system that can follow the sun's movement. “It’s like a sunflower that always turns toward the light to capture as much energy as possible,†she says with enthusiasm. Their invention, called the Solar Maximum Power Automatic Tracking System, has now been granted national patent protection.
Solar energy is a clean and renewable resource, but current technologies often fall short in efficiency. Xu Lining and her classmates noticed this gap and decided to take action. “Traditional solar systems use fixed panels, which are limited by low density, intermittent performance, and uneven spatial distribution,†she explains. “We wanted to improve the efficiency of solar energy utilization.â€
The idea was simple: make the system track the sun like a sunflower, while also protecting it from strong winds. After months of brainstorming and teamwork, they came up with a solution using photoelectric tracking control. They also added wind sensors to the system, allowing it to detect wind speed and direction in real time. This enables the system to automatically adjust itself during high winds, reducing damage from storms.
After a year of research and testing, the team successfully completed their automatic solar tracking system. “Once the sun sets, the panels return to the east, completing a full cycle each day,†Xu Lining said. They also integrated a wireless surveillance camera to monitor the system remotely, ensuring its stability and reliability.
The invention has already received a national utility model patent. Xu Lining hopes it will soon be mass-produced and contribute to the development of green energy. “Our goal is to make solar energy more efficient and widely used,†she said.
This project not only highlights the technical skills of the students but also reflects their commitment to sustainability and innovation. With continued efforts, their work could play a significant role in the future of renewable energy. (Reporter: Tan Zhibin / Photo)
