When it comes to bonding crystal glass, the process must be carefully controlled, as even a small mistake can lead to contamination from glue. Regular adhesives are not suitable for this task, as they may leave residue or damage the surface. Instead, light-curing shadowless glue—also known as UV shadowless glue—is recommended for crystal glass bonding.
This type of glue works by reacting with ultraviolet (UV) light. The photosensitive components in the adhesive react when exposed to UV light, causing the monomer to polymerize and harden. In theory, there is no "leftover" glue once fully cured, and the bonding process should be complete under proper UV exposure.
The bonding procedure is straightforward but requires attention to detail:
- Start by cleaning the surfaces thoroughly. Use a soft cloth or paper towel dipped in acetone alcohol to wipe the crystal glass and the adherend. Make sure there’s no oil, dust, or debris on the surface. If any dirt is present, clean it immediately to ensure a strong bond.
- Apply a small amount of the light-curing shadowless glue onto the bonding area. Press the two surfaces together gently to spread the glue evenly and eliminate air bubbles that might weaken the bond.
- Expose the glued area to UV light. You can use sunlight or a mercury lamp placed about 10 cm away. A curing time of 5 to 10 seconds is usually enough for initial positioning. However, full curing depends on the power of the UV lamp and the distance from the surface. For optimal results, use a UV lamp with a wavelength between 200-400 nm, and allow a few minutes for complete curing.
- Keep in mind that the adhesive layer should be thin and even. Avoid applying too much glue, as a thick layer can reduce the strength of the bond and may not cure properly.
