According to a report by Saudi Arabia’s “Life News†on March 6th, Egypt is set to launch a new gasoline distribution system using smart cards. The plan, announced by the Minister of International Cooperation, Ayman Arabi, includes distributing smart cards for government vehicles starting in May this year, with the public rollout beginning in July. This initiative aims to modernize fuel distribution and improve efficiency in managing domestic oil subsidies.
The smart card system is designed to ensure fairer access to subsidized fuel. Under the new policy, cars with engines under 1600 cc will receive an annual subsidy of 1800 liters, which can be purchased at a discounted rate through the smart card at designated gas stations. Any amount exceeding the limit must be paid at the market price. This approach is intended to prevent misuse of the subsidy and ensure that benefits reach those who need them most.
Additionally, each private car owner will receive one smart card, contrary to earlier rumors that suggested one card per family. Major gas stations across Egypt are also preparing special pricing systems to support the use of these cards, making it easier for citizens to access the subsidized fuel. This move is expected to reduce the burden on the national budget while promoting more transparent and equitable fuel distribution.
Analysts believe that the introduction of the smart card system aligns with Egypt’s efforts to meet conditions set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for financial assistance. By implementing this digital solution, the government can significantly cut down on its costly fuel subsidies. It also allows for better targeting of aid, ensuring that every citizen receives their fair share. Recently, the Egyptian government announced its latest fiscal plan, aiming to bring the budget deficit for the 2013-2014 fiscal year below 11%, marking a key step toward economic stability.
