The Spring Festival is just around the corner, and like every year, households are getting ready by cleaning their homes. But there's one tricky question: what to do with that old sofa, big furniture, or worn-out bed? In Hangzhou, the Environmental Group has introduced a new service to make this easier—free removal of large garbage items. If you need to get rid of bulky furniture, sofas, or other oversized items, you can simply call and book the service.
Starting this year, two specially modified garbage trucks will be on duty daily to collect large waste. However, before they arrive, you'll need to move the items to the community’s designated garbage bins. In some neighborhoods with narrow roads, the trucks can't enter, so you may have to carry the items outside the community area for collection.
Yesterday, in the Dongxinyuan community, a 5-ton garbage truck collected three sofas and three beds from three different households. The process was smooth, and the team handled everything efficiently.
Mr. Pan, who oversees the large waste recycling program, explained, "We don’t accept construction debris like broken bricks or tiles, as those are not part of our recycling services." He also advised people to clearly communicate with the staff when booking the service—let them know how many items you need to remove and roughly how large they are. This helps ensure the right amount of resources are allocated.
So, what happens to the collected garbage? According to the workers, it's sorted and then reused. For instance, old wooden furniture can be broken down and pressed into new wooden panels. Fabrics like cotton and linen can be processed into paper or fiberboard. This way, even old household items find a second life, contributing to a more sustainable environment.
