A research team led by Prof. Kang Junyong from the School of Physics and Mechatronics Engineering at Xiamen University has made a breakthrough in deep ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (LEDs). By coating a layer of ultra-thin aluminum film on the surface of high-aluminum nitride LEDs, they have overcome a major limitation in these devices. This innovation addresses the long-standing issue of low optical extraction efficiency, which has hindered the broader application of such technology in medical, environmental, and military fields. Their findings were recently published in *Science Reports*, an open-access journal under the *Nature* Publishing Group.
Deep ultraviolet light, defined as light with a wavelength shorter than 280 nm, plays a crucial role in water and air purification, disease treatment, and advanced information technologies. However, due to the challenges in material properties and fabrication processes of high-aluminum nitride compounds, the efficiency of extracting deep UV light from LEDs has been very limited. As a result, only a small portion of the electrical energy is converted into usable light, leading to significant energy loss and restricting the practical use of these devices.
After years of research, Associate Professor Huang Kai and doctoral student Gao Na introduced a novel solution: using an ultra-thin aluminum film, just 5 nanometers thick, on the surface of the LED. Contrary to traditional mirrors that reflect most of the light, this thin aluminum layer was found to effectively collect and redirect the emitted light sideways, allowing it to pass through the film and emerge from the front. This clever design significantly improved the light extraction efficiency, marking a major step forward in the development of deep UV LED technology.
The study opens up new possibilities for enhancing the performance of these devices, potentially enabling more efficient and practical applications in various industries.
