Key points for fertilization management of open field cucumber

For autumn cucumber cultivation, it is essential to choose varieties that are highly heat-resistant, disease-resistant, and have strong growth potential and high yield. It is important not to plant them too late, as the lower temperatures in later stages can negatively affect fruit set. In autumn, the vegetative and reproductive growth of cucumbers occur simultaneously, which means the growth period is short, the development is rapid, and the nutrient requirements are high. Fertilization should follow the principle of "applying base fertilizer, light top dressing, and heavy fertilization during fruiting," as well as "frequent small feedings and using well-decomposed manure." Typically, about 1,500 kg of manure or compost, along with 50 kg of compound fertilizer or a mix of 50 kg of compound fertilizer and 25 kg of ammonium bicarbonate, should be used as base fertilizer. After planting seedlings, a diluted human excrement solution (1:10) can be applied as a seedling fertilizer, and additional fertilization should be done once a week while training the vines. As the plants enter the fruiting stage, the amount of top dressing should be increased. If conditions allow, one application per harvest is recommended. During rainy weather, 5–7.5 kg of urea per mu can be applied. During the fruiting period, a 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution can be used for foliar feeding. Water management is also crucial for autumn cucumbers. Overwatering or improper irrigation can lead to diseases, reduce yield, and cause premature harvesting. Therefore, irrigation should be based on weather conditions, soil moisture, and plant health. Watering should be done in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler, avoiding midday watering. Drip irrigation or "horse watering" methods are recommended to ensure consistent and efficient water supply. The goal is to maintain moist but not waterlogged soil. Regular monitoring and timely topdressing after soil shrinkage will help keep the growing environment optimal for cucumber production. With proper care, autumn cucumbers can thrive even under challenging conditions.
