Key points for fertilization management of open field cucumber

For autumn cucumber cultivation, it is essential to select varieties that are highly heat-resistant, disease-resistant, and have strong growth potential and high yield. Planting should not be delayed, as lower temperatures later in the season can negatively affect fruit set. During the autumn season, the vegetative and reproductive growth phases of cucumbers occur simultaneously. This period is relatively short, with rapid growth and high nutrient demands. Fertilization should follow the principle of "applying a sufficient base fertilizer, light side dressing, and heavy fertilization during fruiting," along with "frequent but small applications, using fertilized water." Typically, about 1500 kg of manure or compost combined with 50 kg of compound fertilizer, or 50 kg of compound fertilizer plus 25 kg of ammonium bicarbonate, should be used as base fertilizer. After planting, seedlings can be fed with a 1:10 dilution of human excrement. One application per week is recommended, while also supporting the vines as they grow. Once the fruiting stage begins, the amount of top dressing should gradually increase. If possible, apply fertilizer after each harvest. In rainy conditions, 5–7.5 kg of urea per mu (approximately 667 square meters) can be applied. During the fruiting period, a 0.3% solution of potassium dihydrogen phosphate can be sprayed along with urea as a foliar fertilizer. Water management is equally important for autumn cucumbers. Proper irrigation is necessary to prevent diseases and maintain high yields. Improper watering can lead to early wilting and reduced productivity. Therefore, irrigation should be based on weather conditions, soil moisture, and plant needs. It's best to water in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler. Avoid watering at noon, as this can cause stress to the plants. Drip irrigation or "horse watering" methods are ideal, allowing for small, frequent watering sessions. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist without overwatering. Timely topdressing after soil shrinkage helps maintain optimal growing conditions and supports healthy fruit development.
