A team of international researchers from France, the United States, and Germany has recently developed a groundbreaking method for synthesizing high-quality graphene nanoribbons, successfully demonstrating their exceptional electrical conductivity at room temperature. This breakthrough opens up new possibilities for next-generation electronic devices. The findings were recently published on the official website of *Nature* magazine.
Graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice, is known for its remarkable physical properties. At room temperature, electrons move through graphene 200 times faster than they do in silicon. While carbon nanotubes—formed by rolling up graphene sheets—have shown excellent electrical performance, their complex structure makes them difficult to integrate into traditional electronic chips. As a result, scientists have turned their attention to another form of graphene: flat, narrow nanoribbons.
The research team devised an innovative approach to fabricate high-quality graphene nanoribbons with a width of just 40 nanometers. Previously, such nanoribbons had rough edges that significantly hindered their electrical performance. To address this issue, the researchers used a technique involving grooves etched into silicon carbide crystals, where they directly grew the graphene nanoribbons. Testing showed that the electron mobility of these new nanoribbons exceeded 1 million cm²/Vs at room temperature—over 1,000 times higher than that of silicon-based semiconductors commonly used in computer memory (which typically range around 1,700 cm²/Vs).
Moreover, the newly developed fabrication method is scalable and ensures consistent structural quality, making it feasible for mass production. This advancement brings graphene one step closer to practical applications in the electronics industry, potentially revolutionizing everything from high-speed computing to flexible electronics.
