Precautions for daily use of pig feed

In order to ensure the health and productivity of pigs, it's essential to carefully manage their feed composition. First, the feed should be as finely processed as possible to prevent mold growth and spoilage. Fishmeal should be used sparingely to keep feeding costs low. Additionally, rapeseed cake and cottonseed cake must be properly detoxified before use, and when feeding pregnant sows, their inclusion should not exceed 5% of the total feed ration. Overfeeding green or succulent feeds to boars can lead to a condition known as "grass belly," which may negatively impact their breeding performance. However, for empty sows, a higher amount of green and juicy feed can help stimulate estrus. When raising soil-bred pigs or crossbred pigs, the proportion of corn and soybean meal can be slightly reduced, with some of the corn replaced by secondary flour or rice bran. A portion of the rapeseed cake, cottonseed cake, or other protein sources can also be substituted with soybean meal to lower feeding costs while improving overall efficiency. It’s important to adjust feed proportions according to the season. During winter, increasing the energy content of the feed—such as more corn—can help pigs better withstand cold weather and improve disease resistance. At the same time, the protein level, such as from soybean meal, should be adjusted but not reduced by more than 15%. In summer, the energy feed ratio should be slightly decreased, and calcium levels should be increased accordingly to support pig health. Certain plants should be avoided to prevent poisoning. For example, leafy vegetables should not be fed in excess, as they can cause nitrite poisoning. Similarly, tender corn or sorghum seedlings should not be given to pigs, as they may lead to hydrogen cyanide poisoning. Potato sprouts and their fresh stems and leaves are also dangerous and can cause solanine poisoning. Lastly, salt and distiller’s grains should be carefully controlled to avoid salt poisoning or distiller’s poisoning, both of which can result in serious economic losses. Proper monitoring and management of these ingredients are crucial for maintaining the well-being and profitability of pig farming operations.
