The problem that should be paid attention to in the greening of the living room

Many families now enjoy adding small plants to their living rooms to bring a touch of nature indoors. However, not all plants are suitable for indoor placement, so it's important to be mindful when choosing which ones to bring into your home.

First and foremost, less is more. While many people believe that green plants help purify the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, this isn’t entirely accurate. Plants perform both photosynthesis and respiration. During the day, they mainly carry out photosynthesis, but at night or in low-light conditions, they switch to respiration, taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. If there are too many plants in an enclosed space with poor ventilation, especially at night, the concentration of carbon dioxide can rise, potentially affecting your health over time.

Secondly, avoid toxic plants. Some plants may contain harmful substances that could be dangerous if ingested or even through prolonged exposure. According to research from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, around 52 types of common houseplants have been found to contain cancer-promoting compounds. Examples include variegated wood, impatiens, thorns, red-backed guinea, fake forsythia, alpine snow, bee lumps, and unicorn crowns. These substances don't directly cause cancer, but they can enhance the effects of other carcinogens. It's best to avoid these plants in your home to keep your environment safe.

Lastly, opt for arrangements instead of large potted plants. Choose smaller, delicate plants rather than big, cumbersome ones. If you do decide to use potted plants, go for small, low-maintenance varieties. Traditional flowers like roses, chrysanthemums, lilies, bells, daffodils, dahlias, and jasmine are not only beautiful but also safe for indoor spaces. However, it’s generally recommended to avoid placing flowers and plants in the bedroom. If you must have some, consider small succulents like cacti or prickly pears, which are easier to manage and less likely to cause issues.
