Occupational Disease Hazards Occupational Exams

On May 16th, employees who had been exposed to occupational hazards were required to undergo individual health checks before leaving their jobs. Failure to do so could result in uncertainty if they later developed occupational diseases, making it difficult to protect their rights. This week marks the annual Occupational Disease Prevention and Awareness Week. Yesterday, the Fuzhou Health Bureau, the Fuzhou Safety Supervision Bureau, and the Fuzhou City Federation of Trade Unions held an "Occupational Disease Prevention and Control" campaign on Zhongting Street in Fuzhou. According to the Fuzhou City Health Bureau, employers are legally obligated to organize occupational health examinations for workers before, during, and after their employment in hazardous positions. These exams must be recorded in occupational health surveillance files. The costs of these examinations are fully covered by the employer. Unlike regular physical exams, occupational health checks are tailored to specific risks—such as dust exposure, which requires X-rays and lung function tests, or lead exposure, which involves urine and blood lead testing. These exams must be conducted at certified medical institutions; otherwise, the results may not be recognized. Despite these regulations, current supervision shows that while pre- and during-employment exams are common, post-employment exams remain low. According to staff from the Fuzhou Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 8,000 workers receive occupational health exams annually. However, many lack proper follow-up exams upon leaving their jobs. "If an employer does not conduct pre-employment health checks, they cannot assign workers to hazardous roles. Employees with contraindications must not be placed in tasks that could worsen their conditions. Additionally, workers who haven't undergone these exams cannot be legally terminated," explained a representative. Without proper exams, both parties face complications. With high worker mobility, many leave without undergoing check-ups, making it hard to determine whether any illness occurred at their previous job or new one. Without evidence, workers may struggle to claim compensation, and employers might avoid responsibility. The official advised all workers exposed to occupational hazards to actively request their employers to arrange post-employment health checks and to obtain copies of their health records. If employers fail to comply, workers can report the issue to relevant authorities such as labor departments, health supervisors, or safety regulators.
