Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has announced a recall of over 22,000 Acura MDX SUVs in North America due to potential issues with the drive shaft that could lead to dangerous situations on the road. The affected vehicles include a total of 22,698 units from the 2014 model year—19,197 in the United States and 3,501 in Canada.
The issue stems from the bolts connecting the transmission shaft and the universal joint not being properly tightened during manufacturing. Over time, these bolts may loosen and eventually fall off, causing a section of the drive shaft to detach while driving. This can result in unusual noises, loss of power, or even sudden mechanical failure, increasing the risk of accidents.
This problem was first identified in October at Honda’s assembly plant in Alabama, where inspectors found 15 additional vehicles with the same issue. As a precaution, the company initiated a voluntary recall for those models. So far, Honda has not received any reports of consumer complaints, accidents, or injuries related to this fault. However, the company is preparing to notify vehicle owners in the coming weeks.
Owners of the affected vehicles are advised to contact their local Acura dealerships for further information and to schedule a free inspection and repair.
