Fog hit protective masks, air purifiers selling

Fog has returned again! The Central Meteorological Observatory continues to issue heavy fog warnings, with more than half of southern China's Huang Huai region experiencing dense fog today. Provinces such as Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Jiangsu, Shanghai, and Fujian are facing severe visibility issues, with some areas reporting visibility under 500 meters. In regions around Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hebei, Tianjin, and Shandong, fog is moderately widespread, causing significant disruptions. Meanwhile, respiratory illnesses have surged across the region. At a top hospital in Shanghai, the sound of coughing in the respiratory department’s waiting area is constant. According to nurses at the hospital, the number of patients with asthma and colds has increased significantly. “We had about 100 patients in the morning,” they said. Experts warn that smog contains harmful pollutants like sulfur dioxide, which can enter the bloodstream through the respiratory system. These particles can cause inflammation and worsen existing conditions. Long-term exposure may lead to chronic coughs, rhinitis, bronchitis, or even more serious health issues. Since November, many cities across China have been plagued by haze. Shanghai was hit again recently, with PM2.5 levels rising sharply. By 7 a.m., the concentration had already reached 300 micrograms per cubic meter—severely polluted. As the air quality worsens, more people are turning to masks and air purifiers for protection. Sales of protective masks have skyrocketed, with shortages reported in Beijing and Shanghai. A 3M anti-particulate mask sold nearly 20,000 units in one week in East China. Retailers like Suning Tesco are running promotions such as “100 yuan minus 30” and “200 yuan minus 60” to boost mask sales. Air purifier sales have also surged, with a 680% increase compared to the same period last year. High-end models, especially those priced between 3,000 and 4,000 yuan, are in high demand. One Philips model, costing over 3,400 yuan, sells more than 3,000 units daily. Experts advise vulnerable groups—such as children, the elderly, and those with heart or lung conditions—to stay indoors and avoid outdoor activities. General populations should also limit time outside and reduce window ventilation. Outdoor workers are urged to take necessary precautions to protect their health.
