The existence and nature of respiratory hazards

Normal air is primarily composed of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and a small percentage of inert gases. However, when harmful substances are present—such as any gaseous or particulate matter not normally found in the atmosphere and at concentrations exceeding the limits set by national occupational hygiene standards—it becomes a respiratory hazard.

Harmful substances in the air can exist in five main forms:

1. Dust: Tiny solid particles suspended in the air, typically created by mechanical processes that break down solid materials. Examples include coal dust, cement dust, and asbestos fibers. These particles can be inhaled and cause long-term health issues if not properly controlled.

2. Smoke: Very fine solid particles that form when gases or vapors condense. Smoke from welding, for instance, consists mainly of metal oxides and can be highly dangerous when inhaled.

3. Fog: Small liquid droplets suspended in the air, often generated by spraying liquids. This includes things like paint mist or chemical mists used in industrial settings.

4. Gases: Harmful substances that exist as gases under normal temperature and pressure conditions. Common examples include chlorine, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and sulfur dioxide, which can be toxic even in small amounts.

5. Vapors: Gaseous forms of substances that are originally in liquid or solid form at standard conditions. Benzene, toluene, gasoline, and mercury vapor are all examples of this type of airborne contaminant.

Dust, smoke, and fog are collectively known as particulates or aerosols. These particles are usually odorless, and the smaller they are, the longer they remain suspended in the air and the more likely they are to be inhaled. Our respiratory system has natural defenses to trap larger particles, but those smaller than 10 to 7 microns can bypass these defenses and reach the alveoli in the lungs. Over time, this accumulation can lead to serious health problems such as pneumoconiosis. Respiratory dust refers to fine particles that are not visible to the naked eye, typically less than 10 microns in size. Larger particles, visible to the eye, are generally too big to be inhaled deeply into the lungs. That’s why welding smoke may appear visible in certain conditions, but once it disperses, it becomes invisible to the naked eye.
