In the early 1990s, many substations built by chemical companies in the 1950s and 1960s were reaching a critical stage where major upgrades became necessary. To encourage the adoption of vacuum circuit breakers, overhead cable installation, and high-voltage busway systems for short-distance, high-capacity power distribution, a technical exchange conference on switchgear and cabling was organized in Zhangjiajie in May 1995. The event featured key speakers such as Gu Nihong, director of the Electric Power Research Institute under the Ministry of Electric Power, who discussed the current state and future development of circuit breakers for 35kV and below. Deng Changsheng, a senior engineer from the Shanghai Circuit Research Institute, provided insights into cable structures and accessories. Representatives from Jihua shared their experiences in upgrading old transformer substations, while Dahua presented innovations in cable laying and the application of high-voltage busways.
To further advance electrical technology within China's soda ash industry, two national conferences were held: one in Dalian in August 1995 and another in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, in April 2002. These meetings focused on the protection of electrical equipment against corrosion, moisture, and dust in the alkali industry, as well as the modernization of lime kiln loading systems. It was decided that low-voltage vacuum contactors would be widely used as power switches for frequent-starting equipment like lime kilns.
In January 1996, an electrical technology exchange meeting was held in Guilin to promote insulation upgrades for high-voltage switchgear and the use of heat-shrinkable materials in substation insulation protection. Companies such as Tianjin Boan Electric Insulation Material Technology Development Co., Ltd. and Changchun Heat Shrinking Materials Co., Ltd. introduced these technologies, which were highly welcomed by attendees due to the long-standing issues with insulation failures in chemical plants.
A national technical exchange meeting on electrical systems for large-scale fertilizer plants took place in Dalian in September 1997. The conference emphasized the localization of electrical equipment and the implementation of maintenance procedures. Based on the technological level of China’s electrical manufacturing industry at the time, it was concluded that domestically produced switchgears could meet the requirements for chemical fertilizer projects. If a large chemical plant were to be introduced, its substation equipment could be fully localized.
In December 1997, a technical seminar on capacitance current tracking compensation devices for the power supply system was held in Zhuhai, Guangdong. Zhuhai Jinhong Electric Company presented a patented technology developed by Shanghai Jiaoda University: an automatic tracking compensation system for arc suppression coils. Over 90% of participating enterprises found this technology beneficial, as it helped reduce capacitive current, lower overvoltage levels, and improve overall power supply reliability.
